Angela Merkel re-engages Germany as active player in European Union

...Germany is about to re-engage with Europe. Having turned inwards for the best part of a decade, Germany is ready again to become an active, even assertive, player in the European Union...

...Mr Kohl — notably absent from the Wall ceremonies yesterday — always argued that, German unity and deeper European integration were two sides of the same coin. If Germany was to grow bigger, then, it had to reassure its neighbours — and not just a sceptical Baroness Thatcher — that it was embedded in the European Union.

...So Chancellor Merkel feels that the time has come to turn Germany outwards again.

...she wants a big German input into the euro-zone over the coming years of delicate economic recovery. Because this is exactly what her mentor Mr Kohl would have done.

All the signs are that this will only be the beginning.

German FM Steinmeier Watch

A man to watch? German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier



German FM less Jew-friendly than Nazis - The visiting German FM stated that Middle East peace cannot advance unless Israel freezes the settlements. Presumably Hamas would then reconcile with Fatah, PIJ would dismantle its rocket arsenals, and all of them would embrace the Jewish state, if only it would stop a few housing projects in the West Bank.

Even the Nazis supported the Zionist settlement movement, if only as a way of moving the German Jews to Palestine

Steinmeier, who is also vice chancellor and is challenging conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel in September general elections, is on his 14th Middle East tour since taking office in November 2005 in a left-right government...


He warned that regional powers such as Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates which have been "constructive" on Middle East peace could jump ship if Israel continues to build on occupied land...

Steinmeier said Europe and Germany have a crucial role to play in laying the groundwork for a Middle East peace backed by Arab neighbours, adding that "Germany has a voice that is heard in the entire region...
